Day 3 · Act I — Lead Yourself
Emotional Intelligence Under Pressure
Regulation · Goleman's framework
~30 minutes
Pressure does not create your character; it reveals the version you have practised.
The Core Idea
Under stress, the brain's threat response narrows attention and pushes toward fight, flight or freeze. Leaders who have not mapped their triggers outsource their behaviour to that response.
Emotional intelligence is not about suppressing feeling; it is about noticing it early enough to choose. The leader's emotional state is contagious — a single irritated reply in a crisis meeting can silence a room for weeks.
The Mental Model
Goleman's Four Domains
Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management — popularised by Daniel Goleman.
At work: A VP notices her jaw tightening as a project slips (self-awareness), pauses before responding (self-management), asks what the team needs (social awareness), and reframes the setback together (relationship management).
The Case Study
Captain Sullenberger and US Airways 1549
DocumentedIn January 2009, after a bird strike disabled both engines, Captain Chesley Sullenberger landed the aircraft on the Hudson River; all 155 people survived.
Interpretation: decades of training made calm, clear judgement available when seconds mattered.
Cinema & Story

Composure under pressure is a trained capability, not a personality trait.
