Day 2 · Act I — Lead Yourself

The Discipline of Personal Leadership

Habits · Implementation intentions · Consistency

~25 minutes

Character is the sum of what you do when no one is keeping score.

The Core Idea

Teams calibrate to a leader's consistency more than to their charisma. A leader who keeps small commitments earns the credibility to ask for large ones.

Discipline is less about willpower and more about design. Behavioural science shows that specific plans — 'when X happens, I will do Y' — dramatically improve follow-through compared with vague intentions. Today you build one keystone leadership habit and engineer the environment around it.

The Mental Model

Implementation Intentions

An if-then plan linking a situational cue to a chosen response, studied extensively by psychologist Peter Gollwitzer.

At work: 'When I finish my 9 a.m. stand-up, I will spend ten minutes on my single most important task before opening email.'

The Case Study

Daily routines of disciplined operators

DocumentedMany long-tenured executives describe protected thinking time as a fixed calendar block rather than a leftover.

Interpretation: strategy rarely suffers from lack of ideas; it suffers from lack of protected attention.
